比較（原級・比較級・最上級・no more than・the 比較級, the 比較級）
この単元でできるようになること
- 原級（as … as）・比較級・最上級の基本形と、倍数表現（twice as … as）を使える
- 比較級の強調（much／far／even）、最上級の強調（by far／much）を使える

入試での位置づけ
比較は文法問題の最頻出分野で、とくに no more than（＝ only）と not more than（＝ at most）の区別、the 比較級, the 比較級、not so much A as B、as many as の意味が問われます。共通テストでも図表問題で「A は B の 2 倍」「〜より少ない」を読み取る場面が多く、倍数表現と比較級の否定は読解の正確さに直結します。
1. 基本の 3 つの形

- 原級の否定 not as … as（〜ほど…ない）＝ less … than
- in ＋ 範囲・場所（in the class）、of ＋ 複数・all（of all, of the five）
- 副詞の最上級は the を省略できる：He runs (the) fastest.
- 同一の人・物の中での比較は the をつけない：This lake is deepest at this point.
比較級・最上級の作り方（中学の復習）：2 音節以下は -er／-est、長い語は more／most。不規則：good–better–best、bad–worse–worst、many／much–more–most、little–less–least、far–farther／further–farthest／furthest、late–later／latter–latest／last。
2. 倍数表現と強調

3. no more than／not more than ── 4 つの区別（最重要）

覚え方：no は「差がゼロ」＝ イコールを強調（no more than ＝ ちょうど〜、それだけ）。not は単なる否定（上限・下限）。
A is no more B than C is D ── クジラの構文
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.（クジラが魚でないのは馬が魚でないのと同じ） ＝ A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is.
「C が D でないのと同様に A も B でない」。than 以下が明らかに違うことを持ち出して否定を強める。
4. 比較の慣用表現

the 比較級 の語順：the 比較級（＋名詞）＋ S ＋ V。The more books you read, the more you learn.
5. 最上級の書きかえ ── 同じ意味を 3 通りで
Tom is the tallest boy in the class. ＝ Tom is taller than any other boy in the class.（比較級 ＋ any other ＋ 単数） ＝ No other boy in the class is taller than Tom.（No other ＋ 比較級） ＝ No other boy in the class is as tall as Tom.（No other ＋ 原級）
最上級 ＋ 現在完了の経験：This is the best movie (that) I have ever seen. one of the ＋ 最上級 ＋ 複数名詞：one of the most famous writers
6. ラテン比較級 ── than ではなく to
superior／inferior／senior／junior／prior ＋ to、prefer A to B（A のほうが好き）
This model is superior to the old one. I prefer tea to coffee.（＝ I like tea better than coffee.）
7. よくある間違い
- × He is very taller than me. → ○ much taller
- × This is more bigger. → ○ bigger
- × no more than と not more than の取り違え（only か at most か）
- × The more you read, more you learn. → ○ the more you learn
- × He is senior than me. → ○ senior to
- × I prefer tea than coffee. → ○ tea to coffee
- × Tom is taller than any other boys. → ○ any other boy（単数）
- × This is the best movie I saw. → ○ I have ever seen
8. 自己チェック
- 比較級の強調は much／far、very ではない
- 倍数は twice as … as、three times as … as の形か
- no more than ＝ only、not more than ＝ at most と言えるか
- the 比較級, the 比較級 の両方に the があるか
- not so much A as B は「A というよりむしろ B」と訳せるか
- superior／prefer は to を使ったか
- 最上級 → any other ＋ 単数 → No other … の書きかえができるか
