前置詞（基本イメージ・時と場所・群前置詞）
この単元でできるようになること
- 時の前置詞（at／on／in、by／until、for／during／through、in／within）を使い分けられる
- 場所・方向の前置詞（at／in／on、to／for／toward、above／over、below／under、between／among）を使い分けられる
- 主な前置詞の基本イメージ（of ＝ 所属・分離、for ＝ 方向・交換、with ＝ 一緒・道具、by ＝ そば・手段）から意味をたどれる
- 群前置詞（in front of, because of, in spite of, according to, instead of …）を使える
- 前置詞の目的語が -ing になること、文末に前置詞が残る形（関係詞・疑問詞）を読める
入試での位置づけ
前置詞は「なんとなく」で選ぶと失点する分野です。文法問題では by と until、for と during、between と among、in と within が定番。共通テストでは文法として直接は問われませんが、リーディング・リスニングの時間や場所の情報（by Friday なのか on Friday なのか）を正確に取れないと設問で失点します。英作文では in the morning／on Sunday morning のような細かい違いが減点対象です。
1. 時の前置詞

by と until：by は「期限までに完了」（動作が 1 回）、until は「その時までずっと」（継続）。
I’ll finish it by five.（5 時までに終える）／ I’ll wait until five.（5 時まで待つ）
in と within：in an hour ＝ 1 時間後に（経過）／ within an hour ＝ 1 時間以内に。 次の語の前は無冠詞・前置詞なし：this／last／next／every ＋ 時（× on next Sunday → next Sunday）、yesterday, tomorrow, today

leave for と leave：leave for Tokyo（東京へ向けて出発）／ leave Tokyo（東京を離れる）。 arrive at（狭い場所）／arrive in（広い場所）：arrive at the station ／ arrive in Japan。

手段の by と with：by は「方法・交通手段」（無冠詞：by car）、with は「道具」（with a pen）。 原因の of と from：die of（病気・直接原因）／ die from（けが・間接原因）とされるが区別はゆるい。

5. 前置詞の後ろと位置
- 前置詞のあとは名詞・代名詞（目的格）・動名詞：without saying（× without say）、between you and me（× you and I）
- 文末に残る前置詞：疑問詞・関係代名詞の目的語：What are you looking for? ／ the house I live in
- 前置詞 ＋ 関係代名詞で前に出せる（hg-09）：the house in which I live
- 動詞とセットで覚える前置詞は hv-01（句動詞）へ
6. よくある間違い
- × on the morning → ○ in the morning（on Sunday morning は on）
- × on next Sunday → ○ next Sunday（前置詞なし）
- × Finish it until Friday. → ○ by Friday（期限）
- × during three days → ○ for three days（長さは for）
- × among the two → ○ between the two
- × arrive to the station → ○ arrive at
- × cut it by a knife → ○ with a knife
- × between you and I → ○ and me
- × beside（〜のそば）と besides（〜に加えて）の取り違え
7. 自己チェック
- 時刻は at、曜日・日付は on、月・年・季節は in か
- 「〜までに」（期限）は by、「〜までずっと」は until か
- 「〜の間」は数字なら for、名詞なら during か
- 2 つなら between、3 つ以上なら among か
- 手段の by（無冠詞）と道具の with を区別したか
- 前置詞のあとの動詞は -ing になっているか
