There is / are ・前置詞
この単元でできるようになること
- 「〜がある・いる」を There is / are で表せる（あとの名詞の数で を決める）
- There is の否定文・疑問文と、How many … are there? が作れる
- 場所を表す前置詞（in / on / at / under / by / near / between …）を使い分けられる
- 時を表す前置詞（at / on / in）の使い分けができる
入試での位置づけ
There is / are は、絵の説明・道案内・「〜がありますか」の会話で頻出です。「be 動詞はあとの名詞に合わせる」が問われます。前置詞は、適語補充で in / on / at の使い分けが繰り返し問われ、読解の場所・時の把握にも直結します。ここで「時間の at・曜日の on・月と年の in」を固めておきます。
1. There is / There are
まずここだけ
「（どこかに）〜がある・いる」は There is + 単数名詞 / There are + 複数名詞 ＋ 場所。
There is a cat under the table.（テーブルの下に猫がいる） There are two books on the desk.（机の上に本が 2 冊ある） There is some water in the glass.（数えられない名詞は is）
be 動詞は「あとの名詞」で決まる（There が主語ではない）。
使う場面・使わない場面
There is は「聞き手が知らないもの」を「あるよ」と紹介するときに使います。特定のもの（my bag、the book、Ken）には使いません。
There is my bag on the desk.→ My bag is on the desk. There is a bag on the desk.（ある 1 つのかばん）→ OK
否定文・疑問文
There is not（isn’t） a cat under the table. There are no students in the room.（no + 名詞 = 1 つもない） Is there a park near here?（この近くに公園はありますか）— Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t. Are there any restaurants around here? — Yes, there are.
疑問文・否定文では some → any に変わります（Are there any …? / There aren’t any …）。
How many … are there?
How many students are there in your class?（クラスに生徒は何人いますか）— There are thirty.（30 人）/ Thirty.
「How many + 複数名詞 + are there + 場所?」の語順。
過去形
There was a big tree here.（ここに大きな木があった） There were many people in the park.
よくある間違い
- There is two books. → 複数なので There are
- There is my bag. → 特定のものは My bag is …
- Is there any …? に「Yes, it is.」→ Yes, there is.
- There are no student. → no のあとも複数形（students）
ここまでできれば十分
あとの名詞の数で is / are を選び、疑問文は Is / Are there、答えは there で返せれば、この単元の前半は合格です。
2. 場所を表す前置詞
まずここだけ

in / on / at の感覚
- in：立体の「中」（箱・部屋・都市・国）
- on：面に「くっついて」（机の上・壁・天井も on the ceiling）
- at：地図上の「点」（駅・学校・家・角）
「the picture on the wall（壁の絵）」は接しているので on、「in the picture（絵の中に）」は絵の内側。「上」だけでなく「接触」が on と覚えると、壁や天井にも使えます。
道案内でよく出る組み合わせ
Go straight along this street. Turn left at the second corner. The library is on your right, next to the bank. （この通りをまっすぐ。2 つ目の角を左。図書館は右手、銀行のとなり）
3. 時を表す前置詞
まずここだけ

狭い順に at → on → in（時刻 → 日 → 月・年）と覚えます。
注意する組み合わせ
- at night だが in the morning / afternoon / evening
- on Sunday morning（曜日がつくと on）
- this / last / next / every がつくと前置詞なし：last Sunday、every morning、next week（× on last Sunday）

よくある間違い
- in seven o’clock → at
- in Sunday → on
- on April → in
- on last Sunday → last Sunday（前置詞なし）
- go to school by a bus → 交通手段は by bus（a をつけない）
4. 絵の説明の型
もう一歩（発展）
「絵を見て、内容に合う文を選べ」では、There is / are と前置詞が組み合わさります。
There is a cat under the chair.（いすの下に猫） There are two pictures on the wall.（壁に絵が 2 枚） A boy is standing in front of the door.（ドアの前に少年） The bank is between the post office and the bookstore.
**「何が」「いくつ」「どこに」**の 3 点を絵から読み取り、数で be 動詞、位置で前置詞を決めます。
5. 自己チェック
- There is / are はあとの名詞の数で決めたか。特定のもの（my、the、人名）に使っていないか
- 疑問文は Is / Are there、答えは Yes, there is. か。疑問文では any か
- 場所：中は in、接触は on、地点は at
- 時：時刻 at、曜日・日付 on、月・年・季節 in。last / next / every には前置詞なし
- 交通手段は by ＋ 無冠詞（by bus）か
